When operating a PPS Pump Protection Separator at continuous duty (24/7 for weeks/months at a time) and when operating at the highest 20% of a model’s flow range, LAKOS recommends an alternative technique to the standard Flapper Valve. The Tail Pipe was once the only method used for the evacuation of sand from a Pump Protection Separator; its “always open” configuration more effectively discharges separated sand when continuous, high-flow conditions exist.
The Tail Pipe provides for continuous bleeding of separated sand down through a specific pipe diameter too small for head pressure to keep the sand from dropping deep into the well. Note the flow range, pipe diameter, and pipe length for each model below. Note, too, that Tail Pipes require centering bands to keep the Tail Pipe from being damaged during installation.
